Backup Regularly

If you have suffered from data loss you will know how important it is to backup your data regularly. Use commercial programs like Dantz Retrospect to schedule backups overnight or in downtime.

Purchasing an external harddisk which comes with backup software, such as the Western Digital MyBook, is usually the best way to safeguard against data loss. Companies should consider adding removable harddisk enclosures or tape drives to their server and installing Retrospect or a similar product.

Make Two Backups

It is important to make two copies of all your important data and store them in different locations, in case of damage caused by fire, theft or power surges. Ideally you should make one local backup to an external harddrive or to tape, and another to a remote location, such as an ftp server.

For remote backup you might consider Clunk Click or Zen Internet Backup.
